Training to Failure Is a Tax You Sometimes Should Pay

Proximity to failure decides whether a set counts. Going past it decides how much the next three sets cost.

Failure training is argued about as though it were a personality trait. Hardcore lifters go to failure; scientific lifters leave reps in reserve. Both camps are usually arguing past each other, because they're optimising different variables.

Here's the actual trade-off.

Why proximity to failure decides whether a set counts

A fibre grows when it's fully recruited and under high mechanical tension simultaneously. Recruitment tracks effort — take a set close enough to failure and fatigue forces the nervous system to call up the high-threshold motor units regardless of load. Tension tracks velocity, and velocity only drops enough late in a set.

Both conditions converge in roughly the last five reps before failure. Everything earlier is a fatigue tax paid to get there.

This has a strange implication that's well supported: hypertrophy is similar across loads from about 5RM to 30RM when sets are taken to failure. A set of 25 and a set of 6 contain roughly the same five stimulating reps. The other nineteen bought nothing except fatigue.

So the load isn't the stimulus. The proximity is.

Which means RIR is the real variable — and you're bad at estimating it

Trainees systematically overestimate how close to failure they are. Studies asking people to stop at a self-reported 1 RIR routinely find they could have done three, four, sometimes five more reps.

That matters because the stimulating reps are at the end. If you think you're at 1 RIR and you're actually at 4, you may have done a set containing almost no stimulating reps at all — a full set's worth of fatigue for a fraction of the stimulus.

The fix is calibration, not belief: periodically take a set to genuine failure so you know what it feels like. Not every set, not every session. Enough that your internal gauge stays honest.

The tax on going past failure

Here's the part the hardcore camp underprices. Fatigue isn't free, and it isn't local.

Peripheral fatigue — accumulating inorganic phosphate and hydrogen ions — reduces the force each crossbridge can produce, so per-fibre tension falls in subsequent sets even at identical recruitment. Central fatigue reduces achievable motor unit recruitment, so the high-threshold units you're training for stop being reached.

Both degrade the next sets. Which is why the useful ceiling sits around five hard sets per muscle per session, and why recovery scales so sharply with volume: trained lifters need more than four days to recover from 6–8 sets to failure, but roughly 48 hours from 1–2.

Going to failure on set one makes sets two through four measurably worse. That's the tax, and it's paid in a currency most people never track.

The resolution

Advanced techniques, briefly

Drop sets, rest-pause and myoreps all increase perceived difficulty and total reps. What they largely don't do is increase stimulating reps proportionally — after the first bout to failure, the same recruitment and fatigue limits apply, so each mini-set delivers fewer high-quality reps at rising fatigue cost.

They're time-efficient and recovery-inefficient. That's a reasonable trade when time is the binding constraint, and a bad one when it isn't.

Most people reaching for them would be better served by adding a session.
